Come to Margate
Blackbird is situated in a lovely old market place with the sea and famous Margate sunsets just behind us. Margate Old Town and harbour is home to a growing collection of independent shops, cafes, bars, traditional pubs and galleries as well as the fantastic Turner Contemporary which is just a few hundred yards away.
Margate has a fascinating history, from its beginnings as tiny fishing hamlet in the 17th Century, through its hey day as a fashionable resort that has attracted thousands of visitors every year, including many artists, writers and performers, right up to the 20th Century. Now with determination, investment and vision Margate is renewing itself as a great place to visit, live and work. We’ve included links to just a few of our favourite places new and old, but there really is so much to see and do, you’ll need to come and explore for yourselves.
Margate has been an inspiration since we first set up studios here 4 years ago. It is both challenging and full of contrasts, and there is a great spirit and creative energy. We love being ‘on the edge’ of the landscape with the sea, horizon, endless changes and possibilities in our sights.
